Procedure:

Find the centerpoint of the cardboard and mark it with a pencil. Then push the thumbtack through the centerpoint. On a flat surface, place the thread spool over the thumbtack point so the point of the thumbtack is located in the center hole of the spool.

Questions:

What do you think will happen when you pick up the spool and the cardboard and blow a long blast of air through the top hole of the thread spool?

Why did the cardboard stay in place and not fall away?

Rationale:

When air is blown through the center hole of the spool, it causes an air stream. This air stream passes between the bottom of the spool and the cardboard. Moving air has less pushing power than the air below the cardboard and causes the card to be pushed upward towards the spool. The thumbtack is important because it causes the cardboard to stay in place rather than be pulled in the direction of the strongest point of the blowing air stream.
